Regents Take Action To Help Students Transfer College Credits

Atlanta — June 7, 2011

The Board of Regents of the 澳门六合彩开奖app (澳门六合彩开奖app) approved today a policy change designed to further enhance postsecondary completion in Georgia. The change will allow additional courses from the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) to transfer to all of the 澳门六合彩开奖app鈥檚 35 degree-granting institutions.

Currently, while hundreds of courses transfer from TCSG colleges to individual 澳门六合彩开奖app institutions, only credits in five TCSG-taught core courses 鈥 mathematics, algebra, pre-calculus and English composition (two courses) 鈥 are transferable to all 澳门六合彩开奖app campuses. The Board鈥檚 action adds five TCSG courses in American literature, psychology, economics, sociology and public speaking to that list.

鈥淥ur action is good news for Georgia鈥檚 students,鈥 said Board Chairman Willis Potts. 鈥淯niversity System staff have worked collaboratively with their technical college counterparts to enlarge the scope of our transfer agreements.鈥

The policy change builds upon the 澳门六合彩开奖app鈥檚 existing national reputation for ease of transfer within the University System by expanding the practice to the technical colleges.

鈥淓nsuring all 澳门六合彩开奖app students have complete ease of transfer among our institutions is a priority,鈥 said Chancellor Erroll B. Davis Jr. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a little known plus for our students: many people do not realize that within the University System our core courses have 100 percent transferability 鈥 few state public higher education systems do as well.鈥

Course transfer within the 澳门六合彩开奖app was enhanced by the regents鈥 redesign of the System鈥檚 core curriculum, approved in Oct. 2009.

The core is 60 credit hours that all 澳门六合彩开奖app college students must take, regardless of major, to earn a bachelor鈥檚 degree.

鈥淲e have worked for years in Georgia to promote 鈥榮eamless education鈥 鈥 the ease with which students can move from K-12 into postsecondary education and between the two postsecondary systems,鈥 said Regent Ben Tarbutton, the Board鈥檚 vice chair. 鈥淭his is another important step in that ongoing effort.鈥

The policy change will be effective immediately. To be eligible for transfer, the TCSG colleges must be accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). In addition, students must meet 澳门六合彩开奖app admissions requirements.
